I love Windows Live Writer, but my love for posting with Windows Live Writer has a side effect.  In a little over a year of posting to a variety of blogs I have managed to accumulate 770 posts on my hard drive and consequently, Windows Live Writer performance finally reached the state where I had to find a workaround. Windows Live Writer had slowed way down, almost to a crawl.  A blog entry could take up to a minute or more just to post to the site.

As far as I know, there's no automated way to deal with this yet, but here's a workaround that will bring you back to the quick posting you enjoyed when you first installed Windows Live Writer.

  • Open your My Documents Folder and expand your My Weblog Posts folder.  An easy way to get there is to right click the Start menu and choose Explore:

  • There should be two folders in the My Weblog Posts folder:  Drafts and Recent Posts.  If you want to keep a copy of your Posts1, then create a folder named Archive (and, optionally, a folder called Draft Archive, although the drafts folder is usually much smaller in size) and move the entire contents of the Recent Posts folder to the Archive folder.

That's it.  Create a reminder to perform these same steps again in 3 months and you're good to go.

1 You'll see as you complete these steps that the contents of each post are saved as a wpost file in the Recent Posts folder, and in the current version of Windows Live Writer, these posts are scanned each time Windows Live Writer opens and each time a post is made to your site.  Creating an archive folder as described above will allow you to maintain all of your wpost files without incurring the performance penalty associated with a Recent Posts folder with too many files.

Excellent tip! I use WordPress, but I have tinkered with Windows Live Writer a bit and it seems to be promising. Unfortunately, I post from a variety of different machines at different locations, so my solution has to be entirely web-based. /sad panda

However, Paul Thurrott from www.winsupersite.com (he has an excellent podcast with Leo Laporte called 'Windows Weekly' that's quite informative) has mentioned the Windows Live services on occasion and seems to favor them as well, so I suppose it's worth a try!

Thanks for the comment John.

I haven't used it, but there's a launcher for Windows Live Writer that allows you to run WLW from a USB drive. It's worth a try!

Excellent! I love portable apps, but I use the PortableApps.com ones not the U3 ones. =( But I found this post that shows how to use WLW on a non-U3 device. Wh00t! If you're interested:

Cool. I think his Portable 2.0 product supports both U3 and non-U3 devices, but I haven't tried it yet. I take my laptop with me everywhere.
